Randlay Footbridge, A442, Telford

Project Details

Client: Telford and Wrekin Council

Service Provided: Bridge Clean

Contract Value: £5,000

Completion Date: June 2022

Project Overview

We were appointed to carry out a full external clean of a well-used red footbridge spanning the A442, known locally as the Eastern Primary (or simply the EP), between Stafford Park and Randlay in Telford. The structure had accumulated heavy moss, dirt, and general debris over time, creating both an unsightly appearance and potential slip hazards. Working as part of a wider maintenance programme led by Balfour Beatty, our role was to restore the bridge’s condition safely and efficiently while supporting essential road-closure operations.

Our Scope of Works

Our team undertook a comprehensive cleaning package designed to restore the footbridge to a safe and presentable condition. This included:

  • Removal of moss, algae, and organic growth that had built up over time, creating both aesthetic issues and potential slip risks.
  • High-pressure washing of all accessible surfaces, targeting ingrained dirt and long-term staining caused by weather exposure and traffic pollution.
  • General cleaning and brightening of the bridge structure, improving its visual impact for both pedestrians and road users.
  • Working strictly within the designated night-time closures, ensuring all works were carried out safely and without affecting daytime traffic on the A442.

Methods & Approach

To complete the works safely and without affecting daytime traffic on the A442, all cleaning was undertaken during planned night-time road closures. With the road shut from 8pm to 6am, our team worked within a controlled environment alongside Balfour Beatty’s traffic management and safety teams.

Each shift began with a full safety briefing and equipment check, confirming access routes, lighting, and water management. Using high-pressure washing equipment and targeted cleaning methods, we removed moss, dirt, organic build-up, and general debris from the bridge walkways, barriers, and surrounding surfaces.

We remained in continuous communication with the principal contractor, adjusting our workflow to align with their wider programme. Overspray was managed carefully, runoff was controlled, and the team worked methodically from one end of the bridge to the other to maximise efficiency within the limited time available. This organised approach ensured consistent progress while maintaining safety, quality, and adherence to the reopening schedule.

BeforeAfter

Project Outcome

Upon completion, the footbridge was noticeably brighter, cleaner, and free from the moss and debris that had built up over many years. The surface was restored to a safer and more pleasant condition for members of the public, reducing slip risk and improving the overall visual impression for both pedestrians and road users passing beneath.

Despite the tight working hours, the project was delivered fully within programme, with the road reopening on time each morning and no disruption to the thousands of vehicles that rely on the A442 during the day. The close collaboration with Balfour Beatty ensured every stage ran smoothly, and the works were completed in line with all safety, environmental, and quality expectations.

The successful delivery demonstrated our ability to work efficiently within heavily restricted access windows, operate safely within complex traffic management setups, and restore key public infrastructure to a high standard.
