Project Overview

The Silver Swallow Bridge is one of Telford’s most distinctive architectural landmarks—an enclosed glass footbridge that spans the A442 (Eastern Primary) between Telford Train Station and Telford Town Centre. Designed to echo the sleek form of a bird in flight, the structure was created as part of wider regeneration works and has since become a celebrated feature of the town’s landscape. It has been shortlisted for awards, recognised locally for its unique visual design, and even formally opened during a visit from HRH Princess Anne.

Because of its striking glass façade and constant pedestrian use, the bridge requires ongoing, specialist cleaning to preserve both its appearance and functionality. We were engaged to support this by providing routine internal glass cleaning, annual external cleaning during the A442’s planned night-time closure, and additional maintenance such as pressure washing the bridge deck and removing chewing gum. Our work helps maintain the clarity, cleanliness and architectural impact of this iconic structure all year round.

Our Scope of Works

Our cleaning responsibilities for the Silver Swallow Bridge include:

  • Internal glass cleaning carried out on a regular scheduled basis
  • Full external window and structural cleaning completed annually during the planned A442 night-time closure
  • Ad-hoc pressure washing of the bridge deck to remove dirt, algae and surface build-up
  • Chewing gum removal using specialist equipment
  • Cleaning in a live public environment, ensuring safe pedestrian management at all times
  • Liaison with highways teams during the annual road closure period to integrate with wider maintenance works

This scope ensures the bridge remains clean, safe, and visually impressive for the thousands of people who use it each month.

Methods & Approach

Internal window cleaning is delivered during quiet periods to minimise disruption to foot traffic. Using professional glass-cleaning tools and extension systems, our operatives work methodically along the full length of the enclosed walkway, ensuring clear views and streak-free finishes on every panel.

External cleaning is planned around the A442’s annual night-time deep-clean closure. Working alongside the council’s highways team and other contractors, we use safe access methods to reach the outer glass cladding and supporting structure. Pure water and water-fed pole systems allow us to remove dirt, traffic film, and environmental build-up effectively, even on the highest or most awkward external sections.

The bridge deck is pressure washed on an ad-hoc basis whenever required, especially during periods of high footfall or after seasonal weather changes. Chewing gum removal is carried out using targeted hot-water equipment to lift residues cleanly without damaging the surface. Throughout all works, the public walkway remains safely managed with cones, signage, and controlled working zones.

This combination of routine attention and structured annual deep cleaning allows us to maintain a consistent standard, regardless of weather, usage, or external factors.

Project Outcome

The Silver Swallow Bridge continues to present a clean, bright, and visually striking appearance thanks to our ongoing cleaning programme. Internal panels remain clear and improving visibility and user experience, while the yearly external clean restores the full transparency and architectural impact of the glass structure.

Deck surfaces are kept safe and presentable, with gum and residue removed promptly to prevent long-term damage. By coordinating external works with annual road closures, we ensure the job is completed efficiently, safely, and with zero impact on traffic flow.

Our regular involvement has helped preserve the bridge’s distinctive aesthetic and supported its ongoing reputation as one of Telford’s most recognisable and admired landmarks.
