Project Overview

Stafford Market Square is a busy public space at the centre of Stafford, serving local businesses, market traders and daily visitors. Due to high levels of footfall, the paved areas had accumulated surface dirt, staining and chewing gum, affecting the overall appearance of the square.

Working on behalf of McPhillips, our team was appointed to carry out specialist pressure washing  and chewing gum removal to restore the slabbed surfaces while ensuring the safety of pedestrians in this active town centre environment.

Our Scope of Works

Our programme of works focused on improving both cleanliness and presentation across the main pedestrian areas of the square. The project included:

  • Pressure washing of extensive slabbed paving
  • Targeted chewing gum removal
  • Careful surface treatment in high-traffic zones
  • Implementation of traffic management and pedestrian diversion routes
  • Safe closure and reopening of footpaths as works progressed

All works were carried out by fully trained operatives experienced in both professional pressure washing and safe footpath management.

Methods & Approach

As the works were weather-dependent, scheduling required flexibility. Periods of poor weather meant that planned works had to be temporarily delayed to ensure optimal cleaning results and safe working conditions. Once suitable conditions were confirmed, we mobilised quickly to maintain the programme.

Given the square’s constant pedestrian movement, safety planning was central to our approach. Temporary barriers and clearly marked diversion routes were installed to guide members of the public safely around active work zones. Our operatives are trained not only in high-powered pressure washing equipment but also in managing controlled footpath closures within live public areas.

High-performance surface cleaners were used to lift ingrained dirt without damaging the paving, while specialist techniques ensured effective chewing gum removal from the slabs.

Project Outcome

Upon completion, the paving across Stafford Market Square was visibly cleaner and significantly refreshed. Staining and gum deposits were removed, improving both appearance and hygiene.

The result is a cleaner, safer and more welcoming environment for residents, visitors and market traders alike, supporting the continued upkeep of this important public space.
